The Bottom 100
A few days ago, I estimated that I'd seen some 55 to 60 of the movies on the Internet Movie Database's Bottom 100 movies list. My estimate was good. I've seen 56. I should note that a lot of these that I count as having seen, I haven't seen all the way through. This list is a list of movies that I've seen, or seen all I need to see of it.
Some of these are gloriously bad. Like Plan 9 from Outer Space, Jerry Springer's Ringmaster, Leonard part 6, and maybe even Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. These....there's passion, and maybe even vision, behind them. Just no ability to make it happen.
Others, are guilty pleasures. I have no explanation for my affinity for the Police Academy movies. I cannot defend it. You'll just have to accept me warts and all.
I kind of like Captain America. I think I recall that it was made just so one of the bigger movie companies wouldn't get to buy the franchise rights out from under the company that made it (Carolco?).
A lot of these are kids' movies. It's hard to write a movie that kids and grownups will like. Most end up pandering to the kids, and even the less-than-demanding American movie public won't stand for that. That why you see all the Power Rangers and Digimon and Kazaam you find on the list.
Some of these are just bad ideas. Stop! or My Mom Will Shoot? Who was this aimed toward? You're offending both your Stallone audience and your 60-year-old lady crowd.
Did we really need a sequel to Mannequin? What did we not cover the first time around?
Highlander 2 was a bad idea, because it took such a cool fantasy concept and completely muddled it all up.
And one, in particular, does my heart good to end up on this list. Omega Code was funded by TBN and a lot of the other religious right media. What a piece of junk. Let's make an action drama about the Apocalypse!
Gigli and From Justin to Kelly, both from this past summer, have been trading the first and second spots for a few days now. I'm kind of curious to see them, just to see if they are truly terrible.
But that's something to do when we have a more steady income.
Of these, I think Battlefield Earth, Stop or My Mom Will Shoot, Kazaam and Baby Geniuses are among the bottom of my list.. Battlefield Earth is probably my least favorite movie.
