The Cubs Post
I'm afraid.
I'm not ashamed to admit it.
I'm afraid.
The Cubs won today. They took four of five from the Cardinals. It pretty much universally agreed that this was probably the best series of Cubs baseball we've seen in quite some time.
The Cubs pitching came through. Mark Prior and Carlos Zambrano pitched gems, and Kerry once again lost his nicely pitched game because he was up against another pitcher who was pitching a hell of a game. The bullpen? They kept us in it Tuesday, in that 15 inning marathon. Shawn Estes didn't blow it for us today, which is a victory in and of itself.
The bats came through. Sammy finally hit a home run in the clutch. They battled back from 6-0 yesterday. They kept hitting, and didn't let the Cards, who kept battling, get them down. Moises Alou is my hero. Why did I ever drop him from my fantasy team?
The Cubs wouldn't back down. They were fired up! When was the last time you saw that many ejections in a series? From Dusty and Tony getting into it, to my least favorite six-fingered pitcher taking an umpire to task for a play he had absolutely nothing to do with. The Cubs didn't back down. It's been a while (98) since I think I've seen them this fired up.
But I'm afraid.
I'm afraid that this is the high water mark.
The Cubs need to carry this momentum. They need to take their bats to Milwaukee. They need to take their arms to Milwaukee. They can't let the Brew Crew get them. Don't look ahead to Montreal/Puerto Rico. Don't look ahead to Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. They need to beat the Brewers.
See, in my mind (if not in actual practice), the Cubs beat the big teams. It's the shitty Brewers or the Shitty Reds or the Shitty Pirates they end up losing two out of three to.
I guess that's being a Cubs fan. I'm just constantly waiting for the other foot to drop. The Cubs usually blow it when they're playing teams that are just some suck.
However. I'm going to enjoy this Cubs victory over the Cardinals. I'll raise a cup full of water and Alka Seltzer Cold Medicine (I've caught my Dad's cold) to the Cubbies. Good job guys.
This could be good. This win could put the Cubs in a nice position. The Cards and Astros will play each other six more times, I believe, before it's all said and done. If the Cubs play their hand right (I stopped myself from writing Cards), I think with this win, they've managed to put one or both of the Cardinals and Astros down. It largely depends on what happens in the Astros and Cardinals series.
But I'm waiting for that foot to drop.
