Announcers

I watched last night's Cubs victory on the television, but I searched the radio for viable options.

I don't like Tim McCarver, either. I realize that if you put the baseball announcers that I actually like in one room, you'd only need a few chairs. Tim McCarver is every bit as pedantic and lecturing as Joe Morgan can be, only Joe generally has a point when he talks. What's more, Tim can't seem to let a bad decision go, and he'll harp on it for innings on end. And he never seems to have any fun up in the booth. That's like, my dream job, and he can't seem to get comfortable.

The radio in the sunroom picks up 720 out of Chicago pretty clearly at nighttime, but there must have been stormy weather somewhere between there and here. We ended up on the Braves radio broadcast.

Which is fine. I like Skip, Pete, Joe and Don. Entertaining without being overly talkative. There was a time when they used to drink in the booth. But there was a 16 inning game against the Pirates back in the early 90's that put a stop to that. No profanities on the air or anything that might get the FCC involved. Nothing like that. But discussions meandered and very little baseball was talked after the twelfth inning or so.

So I listened to the Braves broadcast while watching the Fox telecast.

Which was a little disorienting. Because the television broadcast took a second or so longer to bounce around the satellites and the atmosphere to reach us than did the radio broadcast.

So Skip Caray would announce a Vinny Castilla swing and a miss about a second before it would show up on the television screen.

We decided that it was almost like the surprise being ruined....like someone telling you the ending to every siutation in a movie a couple of seconds before it happens.

I did tape the game. How many people out there taped or TiVo's the game? There were a couple of points where Fox had a guest up in the booth (particularly the umpiring discipline dude) where I want to hear what the said, especially regarding the missed call on Lofton's fly ball.

And I think I want to watch that one Subway commercial where the old feller's telling the camera he spotted a grease fire, didn't know what to do with such a CON-fluh-gray-shun, and wonder what Jared would do.

That's a funny commercial.

However, this is exactly part of why I haven't watched 24 the past two seasons, because of the overload Fox gives you before their season starts.
