The Simpsons and Pie Man
The Simpsons and Pie Man
While I've got Sunday night cartoons on my mind....last night's Simpsons, where Homer takes on the guise of Pie Man, was actually pretty funny. Besides the episode written by Dan Castalanetta, it was probably the best episode this season (which isn't saying much, sadly, but those two are head and shoulders above the rest of this season's cretch).
I liked Homer as Pie Man, especially when he starts confusing his birthname with his pie-slinging alter ego. The fact that he gets his mail at his home address was pretty funny.
It was a great Mr. Burns episode, too. Whipping Karl and Lenny while they eat. That's comic gold. And when Pie Man chase through the Power Plant ended with Homer taking a nap on Mr. Burns' couch? Excellent.
But my favorite part was the Golden Ticket to the Bacon Factory Contest commercial at the beginning of the episode. It was funny (I really liked the grease sluice and the conveyor dumping pigs into the industrial grinder, but the cartoon pig eating the real pig was an excellent touch).
But more than that, it set into motion a Simpsonically logical chain of Homer thought that is not based entirely on his being either a jerk or a retard. Also, the episode took a nice left turn from that initial premise into the superhero storyline.
It was good. And if you don't like bacon, to hell with ya.
